The Spartans have started 12-2, tying the record for the best start in school history. There have been just three teams in school history to open the season with a 12-2 record. prior to 2002, the last team to open the season with the same record was the 1971 squad. This weekend, State heads to Indianapolis to take on Butler, IPFW and Western Michigan.
A BIG BEGINNING: State has gotten out to its record-tying 12-2 start by offensively overwhelming its opponents. The Spartans have outscored their nemeses by a count of 166-90 and have out-hit oppOnents, 221-134.
7 X .400: Seven Spartans enter the weekend with a batting average of .400 or better. They include five players with at least eight starts: Bob Malek (.485), Charlie Braun (.457), James Moreno (.448), Chris McCuiston (.420) and Kyle Geswein (.408). Nick Anderson (.500) and the injured Brady Burrill (.450) are also above the mark.
McCUISTON ON A ROLL: Like the rest of the Spartan offense, senior Chris McCuiston is also off to hot start. The senior outfielder entered the sesaon with nine career home runs and already has six in 2002. Hitting .420, he also leads the team in RBI (27), runs (24), at-bats (69) and total bases (54).
HOME OPENER APPROACHES: MSU opens its 2002 home schedule at Kobs Field Tuesday, March 26 at 2 p.m. when they take on Siena Heights. They open host Minnesota in a four-game set to open conference play, beginning Friday, March 29 at 2 p.m.
