Spartan Baseball Falls, 4-3; Nine-Game Win Streak Snapped

INDIANAPOLIS - Western Michigan snapped the Michigan State baseball team's nine-game winning streak, defeating the Spartans, 4-3, Sunday (March 24) in Indianapolis. Despite out-hitting the Broncos, Michigan State failed to score a run in the final three innings. Michigan State is now 14-3 on the season, while Western Michigan improves to 6-6.
First baseman Scott Koerber (So., Harper Woods) hit his sixth home run of the season in the top of the second to spot MSU a 1-0 lead. Western Michigan answered in the bottom of the second frame with a two-run homer by second baseman Steve Horn to take a 2-1 advantage.
After an RBI triple by shortstop Jared Koutnik (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) tied the game, 2-2, in the third, center fielder Chris McCuiston (Sr., Birmingham) belted his eighth homer of the season in the fourth to give the Spartans the lead, 3-2.
WMU rallied again in the bottom of the fourth, tying the game at 3-3 on first baseman Chad Tarpley's solo home run. The Broncos took the lead for good in the fifth as designated hitter Mike Demetral led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and later scored on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Adam Rosales.
Tim Day (Fr., West Chester), who gave up just five hits, suffered his first collegiate loss for the Spartans while falling to 3-1 on the season.
Michigan State is slated to open its home schedule against Siena Heights at Kobs Field on Tuesday, March 26 at 2 p.m.
