Spartans Shut Out Siena Heights In Home Opener

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State baseball team won its home opener Wednesday (Mar. 27) by defeating Siena Heights, 6-0. The Spartans, now 15-3 on the season, will open the conference portion of their schedule this weekend with a four-game home series with Minnesota. With the loss Siena Heights drops to 4-19.
State opened a two-run lead in the third inning when Jared Koutnik (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) and Bob Malek (Jr., Canton). The Spartans then took control of the game, scoring four times over the next three innings to take a 6-0 lead. Scott Koerber (So., Harper Woods) doubled-in Brady Burrill (Jr., Newhall, Calif.) in the fourth, followed by a solo home run by Koutnik in the fifth.
Koerber and James Moreno (So., Holt) each drove in runs in the sixth.
Seven different pitchers saw action for MSU and held the Saints to just two hits. Kyle Geswein (Sr., Dayton, Ohio) started on the hill for State and pitched two complete innings, striking out one. Pat Gill (Jr., Grandvile) earned the win, pitching the third inning and punching out two.
First pitch for Friday's game with Minnesota at Kobs Field is scheduled for 2 p.m.
