NEW ORLEANS, La. - The No. 60 Michigan State men's tennis team had its two-match Louisiana winning streak snapped Wednesday, falling at No. 35 Tulane, 4-3. The loss dropped Michigan State's record to 9-5, while Tulane improved to 8-2.
Tulane won all three doubles matches to win the doubles point, but it wasn't easy for the Green Wave, as all three matches were tightly contested. Junior Jimmy McGuire (Columbus, Ohio) and sophomore Eric Simonton (Annandale, N.J.) were nipped at number-one doubles, 9-7, while juniors Chris Mitchell (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Adam Hourani (Lansing, Mich.) lost a tight 9-8 match at No. 2. At No. 3, junior Goran Topalo (Prague, Czech Rep.) and sophomore Mike Jonckheere (London, Ont.) were edged, 8-6.
The Spartans managed to win three singles matches, but could not gain a fourth victory which would have resulted in a team victory. Topalo rallied for a 2-6, 7-5, ret., victory at No. 3 singles against Jorge Livano, while Simonton rolled in straight sets at No. 5, defeating Alex Dion, 6-1, 6-4. Freshman Cameron Marshall (Louisville, Ky.) also was triumphant, claiming a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory at No. 6 against Goran Vasiljevic.
Unfortunately for Michigan State, Tulane dominated the other three singles matches, as Mitchell (No. 1), Formanczyk (No. 2) and McGuire (No. 4) all lost in straight sets.
The Spartans will take a break before hosting Bowling Green and Bradley on Saturday, March 16.
