Spartan Baseball Shuts Down Wofford, 5-1

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Behind a career-high eight-strikeout performance by starter Bryan Gale (So., Decatur), the Michigan State baseball team defeated Wofford, 5-1, Wednesday (March 6) night. Gale scattered just three hits in eight innings of work to improve to 2-0 on the year.
The Spartans (6-2 overall) improved their record to 4-1 on the current eight-game spring trip.
Michigan State scored one run in the first when Bob Malek (Jr., Canton) scored from first off an error by Wofford pitcher Andy Halligan (0-2). The Spartans extended their lead to 2-0 in the third when James Moreno (So., Holt) singled in Scott Koerber (So., Harper Woods).
Chris McCuiston (Sr., Birmingham) singled home Malek in the fifth as Michigan State moved out to a 3-0 lead. Malek, who finished the game 3-for-4, iced the game in the eighth, with a two-RBI single.
Trailing 5-0 in the eighth, Wofford (10-6) ended Gale's bid for a shutout when Matt Lein hit a solo homer.
Michigan State enjoys an open date Thursday (March 7) before opening a three-game series at Charleston (S.C.) Southern on Friday, March 8.
