Spartans Sweep Charleston Southern With 16-5 win

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Michigan State baseball team completed its second three-game sweep of its spring trip by downing Charleston Southern by a score of 16-5 Saturday (Mar. 9) afternoon. The Spartans, now 9-2 on the year, recorded 61 hits and 39 runs in the three-game set.
The Spartans exploded to a 5-0 lead in the third, sending 11 batters to the plate. Kevin Crews (Sr., Hinckley, Ohio) led off the inning with a solo homer to leftfield while Jared Koutnik (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.), Bob Malek (Jr., Canton) and Chris McCuiston (Sr., Birmingham) hit consecutive RBI-doubles to extend the lead. Later in the inning, State added two more off a single and wild pitch.
State added to its lead in the fourth with four more runs. Malek, who went 3-for-4, blasted a two-run homer to highlight the inning. In the fifth, MSU went up 12-1 with back-to-back RBI-doubles by Malek and McCuiston.
State's true freshmen played a role in MSU scoring four more runs in the seventh to bring the lead to 16-1. Jim Duffy (Fr., Carleton) hit a solo homer to lead off the inning and Travis Gulick (Fr., East Lansing) hit a bases-clearing triple for his first collegiate hit. The Bucs put up four in the seventh to make final, 16-5.
Tim Day (Fr., West Chester, Ohio) started on the hill for the Spartans and went to 2-0, punching out six in six complete innings.
MSU will next be in action Saturday (Mar. 16) at Eastern Kentucky.
