EAST LANSING, Mich. - A season-high seven home runs propelled the Michigan State baseball team past Grand Valley State Wednesday (April 10) by a score of 20-2. The 18-run triumph was State's largest margin of victory this season. Nineteen different Spartans saw action as MSU improved to 20-6 on the season while the Lakers fell to 14-7.
A two-run home run by Brady Burrill (Jr., Newhall, Calif.) just cleared the left field fence in the first inning to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead. In the third, Bob Malek (Jr., Canton) started a four-run MSU charge when he drove in Brett Wattles (Jr., Rochester). Chris McCuiston (Jr., Birmingham) and James Moreno (So., Holt) followed with back-to-back home runs.
Jared Koutnik (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) continued the long-ball theme in the fourth, hitting a two-run blast to straight away center field. Kevin Crews (Sr., Hinckley, Ohio) and James Deliz (Fr., Clinton Twp.) each knocked two-run hits later in the inning to give State a 12-0 lead.
MSU continued its attack in the fifth as freshmen Travis Gulick (East Lansing) and Jim Duffy (Carleton) led off the inning with back-to-back home runs to increase the lead to 15-0.
Each team put up one run in the sixth, and the Lakers followed with one run in the seventh. McCuiston, who finished the day 3-for-5 with 5 RBI, added his second homer of the game in the seventh, highlighting a three-run MSU inning. The Spartans closed out the scoring, putting up one more in the eighth, making the final 20-2.
MSU starter Pat Gill (Jr., Grandville) threw three complete innings en route to his fourth victory of the season.
Michigan State, just a game and a half back of conference-leading Indiana, resumes Big Ten play Friday, April 12 when it plays host to the Hoosiers at 3 p.m. in the first of a four-game series.
