Baseball Shuts Out Michigan, 11-0

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Bryan Gale (So., Decatur) threw his first career complete-game shutout as the Michigan State baseball team defeated Michigan, 11-0, Friday (April 19) afternoon at Fisher Stadium in Ann Arbor. Gale struck out six and allowed only six hits while earning his fifth (5-2) win of the season. With the win, MSU improved to 24-8 overall and 7-5 in the Big Ten while U-M fell to 11-20 and 6-7 in the league.
The Spartans got the scoring started in the second inning, courtesy of a two-run double by Kyle Geswein (Sr., Dayton, Ohio) that scored Brady Burrill (Jr., Newhall, Calif.) and Chris McCuiston (Sr., Birmingham), who finished the game 3-for-4.
In the fourth, State batted around and capitalized on two Michigan errors by scoring five times off four hits. A bases-loaded single by James Moreno (So., Holt) found its way into shallow right field, scoring McCuistion. Jared Koutnik (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) followed later in the inning with a two-out single up the middle that scored Geswein and Charlie Braun (Jr., Grosse Pointe). Bob Malek (Jr., Canton) then reached on an error, forcing in Moreno and Koutnik to put MSU out front, 7-0.
The Green and White built their lead to 8-0 in the seventh as Burrill knocked in Malek on a single up the middle.
In the ninth, MSU scored three more times, making the final score 11-0. Malek lead off with his eighth home run of the year, a solo shot to left field. Braun later followed with a two-run triple.
Bobby Korecky suffered the loss for Michigan, falling to 2-5.
The four-game series continues Saturday (April 20) in East Lansing, as the two teams will meet in a twinbill at Kobs Field, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
