Women's Rowing Concludes Regular Season In Iowa

Iowa City, Iowa - The Michigan State women's rowing team finished the spring regular season with strong showing on Saturday (April 20). The No. 13 Spartans faced Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota in Iowa City.
MSU had a strong start to the day's races against Iowa in the morning session. Michigan State won every race except for the first novice eight race, including the first varsity eight (6:53.32), the second varsity eight (7:09.34), the first varsity four (8:07.19) and the second novice eight (7:47.46).
In the afternoon, the Spartans won two races against Wisconsin, the first varsity eight race (6:51.31), and the first varsity four (7:59.50). The varsity four race was close as MSU won by less than a second.
The first varsity eight boat consisted of coxswain Cassandra Weddel (East Tawas, Mich.), Krista Buzzell (Fenton, Mich.) as stroke, Kate Gay (Cowra, Australia) Laura Thomas (Hastings, Mich.), Stacey Hicks (Bryan, Ohio), Kirsten Seif (Unionville, Ontario), Lori Kingstrom (Troy, Mich.), Jackie Boswell (Rochester Hills, Mich.), and Rachel Miller (Meeteesee, Wy.).
"I think we had some great performances," assistant coach Matt Weise stated. "With these kind of finishes, we are looking forward to Big Ten's and what the team can do."
The Spartans will take a week off before hosting the 2002 Big Ten Women's Rowing Championships, on Lake Ovid on Saturday, May 4.
