No. 12 Michigan State Rowing Falls to No. 8 Michigan

EAST LANSING, Mich. - In a match-up of two dominant Big Ten crews, the Michigan State rowing team lost five out of six races to Michigan on April 6, on Lake Ovid. The Spartans are ranked 12th while the Wolverines are ranked eighth in the U.S. Rowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches' Association poll.
Michigan State had a strong start to the day as the second MSU novice eight boat won its race with a time of 7:59.70. Michigan clocked an 8:04.98. The Spartan boat included coxswain Abby Caldwell (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Niki Barber (Lansing, Mich.) as stroke, Susan Kloet (Escanaba, Mich.), Kristen Jetzke (Detroit, Mich.), Meagan Stockemer (Rochester, Mich.), Jill Wilczynski (Homewood, Ill.), Karly Chambers (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.), Jan Mladonicky (Grand Rapids, Mich.), and Rachel Stover (Potterville, Mich.).
Michigan then took control of the races, winning the next five events, including the first varsity eight, with a time of 7:04.20. MSU finished at 7:12.80.
MSU head coach Bebe Bryans stated, "Michigan is always a tough team, but having to race them this early in the season is nice because we can learn a lot. This race will ultimately help us to be more competitive this season."
The Spartans will head to Columbus, Ohio, in two weeks for the Ohio State Invitational on April 20, 2002.
