EAST LANSING - Back in 1999, Nick Bates thought he was living out the ultimate college baseball dream.

Bates had made the journey from rural Blissfield to the University of South Carolina to play in the top collegiate baseball league in the country - the Southeastern Conference.

But after a year in which playing time was infrequent, Bates decided that playing in the SEC isn't the only avenue to baseball bliss.
