MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - With the victory over Indiana early on Friday afternoon, the Michigan State baseball team (38-19) advanced to take on Minnesota (31-25). The Spartans were playing their fourth game in three days, whereas it was just the second game of the tournament for the Golden Gophers. MSU had some early scoring chances but left six runners on base through the first five innings.
Spartan starter Pat Gill (Grandville, Mich.) held the Gophers scoreless through the first four innings, before allowing an unearned run in the fifth. In the bottom of the sixth, Minnesota scored four runs off Gill and MSU reliever Adam White (Jenison, Mich.). Meanwhile, Gopher starter Jay Gagner held the Spartans scoreless through five innings, allowing five hits. Matt Loberg pitched the final four innings, holding Michigan State to just one hit.
"We've got a good hitting team, but they pitched very well," said Mahan. "This was our fourth game in three days. We're tired. There's no doubt that was a factor in this game. But we're 38-19; we've had a great year and we hope to keep playing next week. We're a good team that's looking to get an NCAA bid."
"We had a couple of guys on with one out in the first inning, but this was one of those games without big innings for us. We had opportunities today, but we didn't get the big hits that we needed. We're a good hitting team, but good pitching gets good hitting out. That's why pitching is the name of the game."
The Michigan State baseball team will find out on Monday, May 27 if they are selected for the 2002 NCAA Tournament. The selections will be carried live by ESPN2 at 12:30 p.m. EDT.
