Charlie Braun Named To Baseball Academic All-District First Team

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State junior Charlie Braun (Grosse Pointe/Grosse Pointe North) has been named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District IV University Division Baseball First Team. MSU senior Chris McCuiston (Birmingham/Seaholm) received second-team honors. The district team is made up of student-athletes from Division 1 schools in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be nominated, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher.
Braun, who plays shortstop and second base for MSU, owns a 3.85 GPA in human biology. Braun is batting .375 this spring on 51 hits, including five doubles, two triples and a home run. He has scored 39 runs and driven in 25 while starting 36 games for the Spartans. Braun also ranks second on the team with 12 stolen bases in 14 attempts, and is third on the squad with a .449 on-base percentage.
As a member of the district first team, Braun will now appear on the national ballot for the Verizon Academic All-America Baseball Team which will be named Tuesday, June 4.
McCuiston, the Spartans' starting centerfielder, has a 3.58 GPA in finance. McCuiston ranks at or near the top of the Big Ten in several offensive categories, ranking first with 121 total bases, second in hits (70) and home runs (12), tied for second in runs batted in (54), third in slugging percentage (.676), tied for third in doubles (15), fourth in batting average (.391), tied for sixth in runs scored (45) and tied for 10th in stolen bases (12). His 54 RBI are already the sixth-best single-season total in MSU history.
Michigan State has a 30-15 record, including an 11-11 Big Ten mark, entering a four-game series against Ohio State this weekend at Oldsmobile Park in Lansing.
