EAST LANSING, Mich. - Seven members of the Michigan State women's gymnastics team have been named Academic All-Americans for the 2001-02 school year by the National Association of College Gymnastics Coaches for Women. Gymnasts must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50 or have earned a 3.50 GPA during the academic year in order to be named to the team.
Julie Devaty (North Olmsted, Ohio) had the highest GPA on the Spartan squad during the 2001-02 school year, posting a 3.942 GPA in education to improve her cumulative GPA to 3.592 entering her senior season. Ilene Cohen (Wantagh, N.Y.), a two-time Academic All-America honoree, earned a 3.704 GPA in human biology during her junior year and has a 3.885 cumulative GPA. Dana Herr (Phoenixville, Pa.) was also named to the squad for a second straight year after recording a 3.556 cumulative GPA in family and community service through her sophomore year.
Lindsey Voth (Sarasota, Fla.) earned a 3.654 GPA in kinesiology during her sophomore season, while Kristina Petersen (Saginaw), another kinesiology major, recorded a 3.593 GPA during her sophomore campaign. Lauren Simpson (Fenton) earned Academic All-America honors during her freshman year by posting a 3.923 GPA in the Lyman Briggs School, while Anna Hunsinger (Elizabethtown, Ky.) finished her rookie season with a 3.75 GPA as a no-preference major.
Michigan State's seven award recipients are the most ever for the squad, surpassing the four honorees from the 2000-01 academic year.
In other gymnastics news, the Spartan squad voted Devaty and fellow senior-to-be Christy Linder (Fremont, Ohio) captains for the 2002-03 school year. Linder was named Team MVP for the 2002 season and owned MSU's highest team scores on the vault, floor exercise and all-around, while Devaty shared the team's highest floor exercise score with Linder and had the second-best beam score.
