Men's Soccer Shuts Down UMass, 3-0

AMHERST, Mass. - Three second-half goals by the Michigan State men's soccer team proved to be the difference as the Spartans clinched the UMass Soccer Classic, winning their second of two games, defeating the host team, Massachusetts, 3-0, Sunday (Sept. 15). In its first game of the classic on Friday (Sept. 13), MSU defeated Hartford, 3-0. Though, it was not a tournament, MSU was the only of four teams to go undefeated. For the Spartans it was their third-straight win as they improve to 4-1, while UMass falls to 2-3.
The Spartans outshot the Minutemen in the first half, 6-4, but could not find the back of the net. In the second half, State took the lead for good at the 62:18 mark when Craig Hearn (Jr., Farmington Hills) scored his first goal of the season, unassisted. Just 2:22 later, Brett Konley (Sr., Plymouth) scored unassisted to boost the MSU lead to 2-0. Jordan Gruber (So., Beverly Hills) scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season with just :15 left in the game, giving MSU a 3-0 win. Konley added an assist on the final goal to give him three points on the afternoon.
Spartan goalkeeper Tyler Robinson (Sr., Lansing) made five saves to notch his second-straight clean sheet and giving him a total of three shutouts this year. He has made 26 saves in in four starts this season.
Michigan State will host Valparaiso, Friday (Sept. 20) at 2:00 p.m. and will open conference play Sunday (Sept. 22) when they face Indiana at 2:30 p.m. Both games will be at Old College Field.
