GETTING READY
Michigan State got a jumpstart on the fall season by winning the Mercian Midwest Spring League Championship in April. The Spartans went 4-0 in league play, defeating opponents by a combined 12-3 count - including three shutouts. The undefeated mark earned MSU a spot in the championship round. After tying Kent State 2-2, the Spartans advanced to the final game to face intrastate rival Michigan. The game was decided by penalty shots after each team went scoreless through 85 minutes of action in regulation and overtime. MSU converted its first three attempts and eventually held off the Wolverines, 3-2, to secure the championship.
