EAST LANSING, Mich. - Three first half goals by the Michigan State women's soccer team were all the Spartans needed to down Eastern Michigan, 3-0, Friday (Sept. 6) afternoon at Old College Field in its home opener. MSU improves its record to 2-0 on the season while EMU falls to 1-2.
MSU scored all it would need just 2:54 into the game when Michelle Perun (Jr., Rochester) taped in the ball off a header by Emma Harris (Fr., Portage). Perun added to the Spartans' lead in the 15th minute, scoring off an assist from Abby Shepherd (So., Milford). A blast by Amy Allen (Sr., Grand Blanc) that found the back of the net at the 30:32 closed out the scoring. Erin Konheim (Fr., West Bloomfield) drew her second assist of the day on Allen's goal.
Spartan starting keeper Stacy Heller (Jr., Madison) was tested little, making just one save before being replaced by Erin Carlson (So., Portage) in the 77th minute. State outshot the Eagles by a count of 21-3 for the game including allowing just one second half shot. It marks the second straight game the Spartans have held their opponent under three shots. MSU also recorded over 20 shots for the second straight game.
"We wanted to get out to a good start at home," said MSU Head Coach Tom Saxton. "We wanted to come out, make a statement and take command of the game."
The Spartans return to action Sunday, Sept. 8 when the host Oakland at Old College Field at 12 noon.
