EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State soccer team defeated IUPUI, 2-1, Sunday (Sept. 8) at Old College Field to improve to 2-1 on the season. Spartan goalkeeper Tyler Robinson (Sr., Lansing) made three key saves all in the second half to ensure a MSU win. With the loss, IUPUI drops to 0-4.
"Tyler was brilliant in goal today," said MSU head coach Joe Baum. "Without a brilliant goalkeeper today, we would have lost. As a team we were pretty lathargic and weren't sharp all day. We just didn't play with much spirit."
Michigan State scored the first goal of the game at the 10 minute mark when Jordan Gruber (So., Beverly Hills) scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season, unassisted. MSU made it 2-0 at the 37:37 mark when an IUPUI defender knocked the ball into his own net.
IUPUI cut the deficit just 1:45 into the second half when an MSU defender kicked a deflected ball into the net to make it 2-1. Each team traded chances the rest of the way, but either team was able to convert. The Spartans outshot the Jaguars, 13-10, for the game.
Next weekend, the Spartans will take part in the UMass Classic where they will face Hartford, Sept. 13, and Massachusetts, Sept. 15.
