EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Michigan State women's soccer team lost to Purdue, 2-1, in a Big Ten match on Friday afternoon at Old College Field. With the loss, Spartans drop to 7-5-0 overall (3-4-0 Big Ten) as Purdue improves to 9-2-0 (5-1-0 Big Ten).
The game got off to a slow start with both teams attempting many shots. Spartan Heather Riley (Fr., Saginaw, Mich.) started the scoring in the 36th minute of the first half with assists from Erin Konheim (So., West Bloomfield, Mich.) and Abby Shepherd (Jr., Milford, Mich.). In the 42nd minute, the Boilermakers' Kelly Haxton scored a goal with a header off a corner kick from Purdue's Shannon Bradbury. At the end of the first half the game was tied, 1-1 with six shot attempts each by both teams. The game-winning goal was then scored by Purdue's Lauren Sesselmann with an assist from Jennie Moppert at 75:32.
MSU outshot the Boilermakers, 10-8, and Spartan goalkeeper Stacy Heller (Sr., Madison, Wis.) finished the game with four saves.
"Every Big Ten game is so tough this season," said head coach Tom Saxton. "We are in the toughest stretch of the Big Ten schedule right now and I truly believe we just need more attitude to step up our game."
MSU plays host to Indiana on Sunday (Oct. 12) at 12 p.m. at Old College Field.
