The Michigan State women's tennis team competed in Day One of The Spartan Cup at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts on Friday. It was a successful day for the Spartans, as MSU singles players combined for a 6-3 record, and the doubles teams went 2-1 on the day. The Spartans are one of five teams competing in the event, joining Ball State, Bowling Green, Cincinnati and Toledo.
Senior Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) highlighted the day's singles action for MSU, reaching the semifinals of the "A" flight in impressive fashion. Lay opened with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Cincinnati's Hannah Hinton in the opening round, before disposing of Toledo's No. 1 player, Monica Ribero, 6-3, 6-0. Lay will face Bowling Green's Ashley Jakupcin in tomorrow's semifinals.
Also in the singles "A" flight, sophomore Shelley Brady (Grand Blanc, Mich.) fell in the opening round to Gaby Coello of Bowling Green, 6-4, 6-2, but bounced back for a 6-4, 6-2 win over Cincinnati's Christina Reyes in the consolation bracket.
In the singles "B" flight, MSU has two of the final eight competitors. Following a first-round bye, freshman Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Cincinnati's Mariana Lozano, while junior Kate Thomas (Long Beach, Calif.) earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Bowling Green's Laura Kokinda, also after a first-round bye. Junior Karen Gustafson (East Lansing, Mich.) won her opening round match, 6-3, 6-2, over Bowling Green's Heidi Romer, but slipped against Ball State's Jessica Thompson, 6-2, 6-1, in the Round of 16. Junior Marissa Macholz (East Lansing, Mich.) dropped her opening match to Bowling Green's Erica Wolfe, 6-3, 6-0.
Lay's third victory of the day came in her only doubles match, as she teamed with Andrews for an 8-2 win in the Round of 16 over Toledo's Jen Meister and Daniella Moran, following a first-round bye. MSU's other tandem of Brady and Gustafson won in the first round against Toledo's Betsy Hoffman and Claire Smalley, 8-2, but were defeated by Jenny Batty and and Susan Kelly of Ball State in the Round of 16.
Action at The Spartan Cup will continue at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts through Sunday.
