EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf team will travel to suburban Chicago this week (Oct. 6-7) for the Windon Memorial Classic hosted by Northwestern. The par-72 North Shore Country Club will be the tournament's home with play beginning Monday (Oct. 6) with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
"North Shore is a great golf course," Coach Mark Hankins said. "It's an old style course, deeply wooded country club course that is extremely well manicured."
The Spartans will face one of the tougher fields of the year at the Windon. In addition to host Northwestern, the field consists of: Arizona, California-Berkeley, California-Davis, Illinois, Kent State, Louisiana State, Minnesota, North Florida, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Purdue, Rice, Southern Methodist, Stanford and Toledo.
"This will be a great field," Hankins said. "There are some strong Big Ten schools as well as some district teams playing.
"It's a new event for us that we have been trying to get into. It's one of those tournaments that that you have to get to certain level before you can play them."
Northwestern will defend their title this week as the event returns to North Shore for the first time since 1998.
The Spartans are coming off another strong showing last week that saw them finish second at the Adams Cup in Newport, R.I. The team was led by freshman Craig Revell (Kingston, Ont.) and junior Andrew Ruthkoski (Muskegon, Mich.), who finished in a tie for 12th shooting a three round total of 222.
Freshman Matt Harmon (Grand Rapids, Mich.) extended his top-20 streak to three with a 19th place finish. Harmon shot a 223 (75-74-74) for the tournament.
