EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State (6-3-1 overall, 5-2-1 CCHA) extended their unbeaten streak to six games as they skated to a 3-3 overtime tie with Notre Dame (5-3-1 overall, 4-3-1 CCHA) on Saturday night at Munn Ice Arena.
"I thought that it was kind of a struggle all night," said second-year head coach Rick Comley. "We had a 3-1 lead and lost it in the third period. We just didn't have the energy."
Contrary to last night's nearly two periods of scoreless hockey, the Spartans got the offensive ball rolling just 7:12 into the contest.
Tommy Goebel (Parma, Ohio) continues to show he is one of the best freshmen in college hockey as he created a turnover in the corner and found a wide-open Jim Slater (Lapeer, Mich.) in front of the Irish net. Slater one timed his team leading eighth goal of the season through the five hole of Irish goalie David Brown. The goal ended an impressive 193:27 shutout streak for Notre Dame's freshman net minder.

Michigan State found the back of the net with just one minute left in the first period on almost a mirror image of Spartans' first goal. Chris Snavely (Lancaster, Pa.) dug the puck out of the corner and found Brock Radunske (New Hamburg, Ont.) waiting in the slot. Radunske snuck his third goal of the season past Brown's left skate to give the Spartans a two-goal lead at the first intermission.
The Irish narrowed the Michigan State lead one at 9:04 of the second period when a streaking Steve Walsh put a rebound past Michigan State goalie Matt Migliaccio (Wyandotte, Mich.).
The Spartans deflated the Irish once again late in the period with a power play goal at the 18:22 mark of the second period. In a mad scramble in front of the net, Jim Slater muscled past two Notre Dame defenders and slid a loose puck past the goal line for his second tally of the night and CCHA leading ninth goal of the season.
But, the Irish continued to hang around as they made it a 3-2 game with a power play goal at the 1:16 of the third period. Neil Komadoski deflected a Tom Galvil shot from the point that sailed over the left shoulder of Migliaccio.
The Irish knotted the game up at three with their second power-play goal of night at 18:54 of the third period. A darting Aaron Gill received a perfect cross ice pass and put a snap shot over the glove of Migliaccio to give both teams a point on the night.
"I think we came away with an empty feeling," said Slater. "I thought we played 5-on-5 great, but then we took two penalties. We let a point slip away from us. We have to give Notre Dame a lot of credit. They never quit."
Migliaccio finished with 30 saves, while Brown had 25.
"We are disappointed that we didn't get the win," said Radunske. "We need to come back strong next weekend."
The Spartans return to action Friday, Nov. 14 at 7:35 p.m. as they travel to Miami (Ohio) to take on the Redhawks.
