DETROIT, Mich. - * Michigan State and Kentucky played before a world-record crowd of 78,129. The attendance figure broke the previous world record of 75,000, which the Harlem Globetrotters set during an exhibition contest in Berlin, Germany in 1951.
The game also set a North American Record, Indoor Record, Collegiate Record and a Michigan State record. The previous North American record was 68,112, set on Jan. 20, 1990 at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans (LSU 87, Notre Dame 64). The old MSU record was 45,406, set in the 2001 NCAA Final Four (Arizona 80, MSU 61).
* Kentucky leads the all-time series 12-9 after today's 79-74 win, and snapped MSU's two-game winning streak against the Wildcats. The victory improved UK's record to 5-0 while Michigan State fell to 3-4.
* The Spartans' last three contests have all been against ranked opponents as Duke (No. 6/6), Oklahoma (No. 14/12) and Kentucky (No. 8/2) have met MSU.
* MSU's three-game losing streak is the team's longest since last year when State dropped three straight from Jan. 11 to 18, 2003 - all three of those contests were on the road against Big Ten opponents.
* Four players on Michigan State's roster hail from the metro Detroit area and had a homecoming today. Maurice Ager attended Crockett High School; Brandon Cotton went to DePorres High School; Paul Davis went to Rochester High School and Justin Ockerman is from Garden City High School.
* The last time Michigan State held a record of below .500 was during the 1995-96 season when the Spartans sat at 5-6. That season was also the last time an MSU team had a 3-4 record.
* Paul Davis' 14-for-14 effort from the free throw line tied him with Alan Anderson (Ohio State, 1/9/03) and Lance Olson (Minnesota, 2/1/60) for fourth-best all-time on MSU's single-game free throws made chart.
* Twenty-four points marked Paul Davis' best single-game output of his collegiate career. His previous best was 21 points against Bucknell (11/21/03) and Indiana (1/28/03). Davis came within two rebounds of securing his first double-double in a Michigan State uniform.
* Alan Anderson tied a career high with nine rebounds (Oakland, 12/19/01).
* Michigan State's 92.0 (23-25) percentage at the free throw line marked its best performance of the year.
* MSU was out-rebounded for only the second time this season (Duke, 31-25). The Wildcats hauled in 28 boards compared to the Spartans' 26.
* The Green and White committed only 12 turnovers for the entire contest, its lowest total since the season opener against Bucknell (nine).
