LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The unfortunate losing streak for the No. 73 Michigan State men's tennis team hit six Monday (March 24) as the Spartans (9-8 overall, 0-2 Big Ten) fell to No. 44 Louisville (14-4 overall, 2-1 Conference USA), 5-2. During that span, five of its six losses have come at the hands of ranked teams.
The score sheet against the Cardinals almost duplicates MSU's match against Penn State March 22. The doubles combination of junior Eric Simonton (Annandale, N.J.) and sophomore Cameron Marshall, who hails from the city of Louisville, came out on top over Cody Conley and Jakob Gustafsson at No. 1, 8-6. The Spartans, however, could not pick up the doubles point as Louisville won at No. 2 and No. 3 for the 1-0 lead.
Marshall and Simonton then controlled action in their respective singles matches. Marshall squeaked out a 7-5, 7-6 victory over Octavian Nicodim at No. 3 and improves to 19-12 for the season, including a record of 11-5 in dual match play. Marshall is now 2-0 for his career against his hometown college.
Simonton also shined in singles for the Spartans' second point of the afternoon. He defeated Harry Walsh at No. 6, 7-5, 6-4, to boost his overall record to 17-13. But MSU could not pick up any more points and fell for the second consecutive match, 5-2.
Michigan State concludes its non-conference schedule with a 9-6 record. The Big Ten season will continue Friday (March 28) and Sunday (March 30) when MSU travels to Iowa and Minnesota, respectively.
