BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - A three-run fourth inning for Indiana proved to be the difference as the Hoosiers defeated the Michigan State baseball team, 4-2, Friday afternoon (April 11) at Sembower Field. MSU now stands at 7-19 (1-6 Big Ten) for the season, while Indiana improves to 21-7 (6-3 BT).
Jacob Cary (7-0) kept his record flawless with an eight-hit complete game on five strikeouts for Indiana. Patrick Gill (Sr., Grandville), who tossed a career high 7 1/3 innings while scattering eights with six strikeouts, took the loss for the Spartans.
With the scored tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, IU plated three runs on two bases-loaded bunt singles and a Spartan error. The Hoosiers loaded the bases with one out when Seth Bynum beat out a squeeze play to make the score 2-1. A Spartan fielding error let another run score on the next play. The mishap in the field was followed by another successful bunt single, putting the Hoosiers up 4-1.
MSU bounced back in the fifth with a two-out RBI single by Brett Wattles (Sr., Rochester) that scored David Miller (Jr., Whitehall). The Spartans threatened to give Cary his first loss as they put runners on second and third with one out in the seventh, but the Hoosier got a strikeout and a flyout to get out of the jam. The Spartans left six runners on base during the game.
Travis Gulick (So., East Lansing) belted his third homer of the season in the top of the fourth as he blasted a Cary fastball over the left-field fence. IU's Kenny Wargo scored the first run of the game with an opposite field home run to right field in the third.
Michigan State and Indiana return for a doubleheader tomorrow (Saturday, April 12) at 1 p.m. CDT.
