LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State baseball team fell to Western Michigan, 4-2, in a chilly, windy game at Oldsmobile Park Wednesday night (April 16). MSU now stands at 10-21 for the season, while the Broncos improve to 14-17.
WMU led the entire game after scoring three runs in the top of the third on a walk and three consecutive hits. The Spartans cut the lead in the fifth as Alan Cattyrsse (Fr., Chatham, Ontario) nailed a double down the left-field line that plated Chris Shea (Fr., Rochester) and Erik Morris (So., Orchard Lake). Cattrysse, who advanced to third on the double due to a throw to home, made the third out of the inning after trying to score on an errant pitch by Bronco lefty Charles Christner to the next batter.
The Broncos responded in the sixth by scoring the game's last run on back-to-back triples by Tom Fabrizio and Adam Rosales.
MSU threatened to score with runners on first and third in the eighth, but slugger Travis Gulick (So., East Lansing), who hit two homers in yesterday's game vs. Wayne State, struck out to end the inning. Bronco pitcher Clark Sterley retired the Spartans in order in the ninth to earn his first save of the season.
Left-hander J.R. Mathes (1-2) picked up his first win of the year by hurling three innings of one-hit ball for the Broncos. MSU starter Chris Toepper (Fr., Portage) pitched six innings while allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits and two strikeouts in the loss (0-2).
Western used four left-handed pitchers in the win. Mathes started the game and tossed three innnings, while Christener pitched the next three. Shawn Morrison then came on for two innings before Sterley recorded the save.
Spartan relievers Patrick Gill (Sr., Grandville) and Ryan Golem (Sr., Dearborn) combined for three strikeouts in three innings of scoreless relief work.
MSU returns to action for a four-game series with Michigan this weekend. The first game is set for Friday, April 18 at 6 p.m. in Oldsmobile Park.
