Spartan Baseball Blasts Siena Heights, 14-6

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State's offense came alive for a season high 16 hits as the Spartans defeated Siena Heights, 14-6, Tuesday afternoon (April 22) at Kobs Field on the MSU campus. The Spartans improved to 12-24 for the season, while the Saints fell to 14-32.
Eleven different Spartans produced a hit and four had at least two in the contest. Travis Gulick (So., East Lansing) led the way by going 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Alan Cattrysse (Fr., Chatham, Ontario) scored three times on two hits and Brandon Volas (Fr., Canton) picked up the first hits of his collegiate career. Scott Koerber (Jr., Harper Woods) also went 2-for-2 with two RBI.
The Spartans built a quick 12-0 lead after four innings and later scored twice in the eighth. MSU scored three runs in the first and six in the second as five Spartans produced run scoring singles, including Brady Burrill (Sr., Newhall, Calif.), who had three RBI in just two at bats.
Cattyrsse and Gulick each drove in runs in the eighth to close the scoring for the Spartans.
Jon Kowalski (So., Sterling Heights) made his first career start on the mound for the Spartans, and responded by pitching four innings of two-hit ball on three strikeouts to earn the victory. Five other Spartan pitchers tossed one inning apiece to close the game.
Siena Heights got on the board in the fifth as Chris Hudson nailed a three-run bases-clearing double to right field. The Saints added three more in the seventh on three hits and two walks.
MSU returns to action to face Central Michigan tomorrow night (Wednesday, April 23) at Oldsmobile Park beginning at 7 p.m.
