Women's Golf Finishes Fifth At Big Ten Championship

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Michigan State women's golf team shot a 310 on the final day of competition at the Big Ten Championship on Sunday (April 27) and finished fifth out of 11 teams in the 72-hole event. MSU shot a four-round total score of 1234 (307-318-299-310) at the par 73, 6,053-yard Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City.
Ohio State defended its 2002 Big Ten title, posting a four-round score of 302-303-295-294-1194, 29 strokes in front of second-place Wisconsin (309-311-296-307-1223). However, a total of just five strokes separated the third- through fifth-place teams as Northwestern (319-314-297-300-1230) finished third, Purdue (312-317-305-298-1232) was fourth and MSU (1234) placed fifth.
Junior captain Allison Fouch (Grand Rapids, Mich.) was the Spartans' top finisher, placing tied for 11th with a four-round score of 79-76-72-76-303. Fouch was 1-over on the front nine and was 2-over on the back nine with a birdie on hole 11 in Sunday's final round. Indiana's Karen Dennison (70-75-72-77-294) and Ohio State's Allison Hanna (70-78-73-73-294) shared medalist honors as both players finished the tournament with a 294.
Freshman Dayna Burleigh (Horsham, Pa.) placed 16th with a 70-81-75-79-305. She was 3-over 39 on the front nine and 3-over 40 on the back nine on Sunday. Junior Sarah Martin (Grosse Ile, Mich.) finished tied for 26th with a four-round score of 77-82-76-78-313. Martin had a pair of birdies on the back nine at holes 10 and 17 on Sunday.
Also competing for the Spartans were senior Jessica Till (Fort Wayne, Ind.), who finished tied for 44th (84-82-76-78-320); red-shirt freshman Jennifer Johnson (Okemos, Mich.), who placed tied for 47th with a 321 (84-79-80-78-321) in just her second collegiate tournament; and junior Ann Marie Kersten (Oak Harbor, Ohio), who tied for 56th place with a 329 (81-82-84-82).
The Spartans, who are currently ranked 11th in the Central Region, will find out this week if they qualify for the NCAA Regional Championships. The regional championships will be held at three different sites (East - Winston-Salem, N.C.; Central - Lincoln, Neb.; West - Tempe, Ariz.) from May 8-10.
