Spartan Baseball Tops Central Michigan, 10-8

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Sophomore Travis Gulick (East Lansing) hit his team-leading 11th homer of the season and Michigan State tied a season high with 17 hits as the Spartan baseball team defeated Central Michigan, 10-8, Wednesday afternoon (May 14) at Theunissen Stadium. MSU improved to 19-32 for the season, while CMU fell to 24-25.
Scott Koerber (Jr., Harper Woods) led MSU's offensive charge by going 4-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. Randy Ortiz (Sr., Rochester Hills) registered a career-high three hits and James Moreno (Jr., Holt) also collected three hits and two RBI. Erik Morris (So., Orchard Lake) extended his career-best hitting streak to 14 games with a single in the fifth.
Jeremy Dow (Fr., Sunfield) earned his first collegiate win by only allowing one hit and one run in two innings of relief. Ryan Golem (Sr., Dearborn) picked up his third save of the season by closing the Chippewas out in the ninth inning.
Central got on the board first in game that featured 17 runs and 29 hits, putting up two runs in the second keyed by a David Latour RBI triple.
The Spartans bounced right back, scoring four runs on three hits in the third. Koerber drove in three runs with a bases loaded triple and Moreno knocked in a run with sacrifice fly.
After the Chippewas went back ahead with one run in the third and three in the fourth, MSU produced another four-spot on the scoreboard in the fifth to jump out to an 8-6 lead. Gulick slammed a two-run blast over the left-field wall and Ortiz nailed a two-run single to right field with the bases loaded.
Moreno added his sixth homer of the season with a line shot to left field in the seventh. MSU took a 10-7 lead when Koerber drove in his fourth run of the game with a single in the eighth.
Michigan State returns to action with a four-game series this weekend against Penn State. The first game of the series is set for Friday, May 16 at Oldsmobile Park in Lansing, beginning at 7 p.m.
