Men's Golf Finishes Seventh At Big Ten Championships

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Michigan State men's golf team finished seventh at the 2003 Big Ten Men's Golf Championships, which was played at the par 71, 6,942-yard Indiana University Golf Course in Bloomington, Ind. The Spartans, who entered Sunday's final round in fifth place, shot a 299 and finished the 72-hole tournament with a final score of 1,168 (286-290-293-299).
Minnesota, who shot a 7-under 277 on Sunday (May 4), claimed the championship for a second-consecutive year with a three-day total of 1,122 (283-282-280-277), while Illinois finished second with a 1,128 (282-281-276-289). Ohio State placed third with a 1,153 (282-288-288-295). Temperatures for Sunday's final round were in the low to mid 50's.
Minnesota's Matt Anderson won the individual title with a 72-hole score of 276 (71-67-71-67). Three Spartans placed among the top 20 individuals as junior Casey Lubahn (Sand Lake, Mich.) and senior Eric Jorgensen (Big Rapids, Mich.) tied for 13th and junior Ben Fox (Fort Wayne, Ind.) finished tied for 18th.
Jorgensen posted a 3-over 74 on Sunday, including five bogeys and two birdies (holes two and 14). He finished the tournament with a 289 (73-70-72-74). Lubahn shot a 6-over 77 and also closed the tournament with a 289 (68-74-70-77).
Fox fired MSU's best round on Sunday with a 71. He had three birdies (holes one, three and nine) to go along with three bogeys, and followed up with birdie (hole 13) and bogey on the back nine. He shot a 292 (71-75-75-71) for the tournament and his 18th-place finish was his second-best showing of the season.
Sophomore Andrew Ruthkoski (Muskegon, Mich.) finished tied for 37th with a four-round score of 299 (74-72-76-77). Ruthkoski shot a 6-over 77 on Sunday with seven bogeys and just one birdie.
Junior J.J. Beckstrom (North Muskegon, Mich.) rounded out the Spartan contingent, placing 55th with a 315 (81-74-76-84).
