YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Michigan State baseball team's offense came alive for 15 runs and 16 hits in a 15-3 thrashing of Eastern Michigan Wednesday night (May 7) at Oestrike Stadium on the EMU campus. The win, MSU's fifth in its last six games, improves the Spartans' record to 18-28. The Eagles fall to 23-22.
Every Spartan in the starting lineup collected a hit while six drove in runs. Scott Koerber (Jr., Harper Woods) knocked in four runs on two hits, Brady Burrill (Sr., Newhall, Calif.) scored three runs including a homer, and Travis Gulick (So., East Lansing) went 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Brandon Volas (Fr., Plymouth) produced a career-high three RBI and Alan Cattrysse (Fr., Chatham, Ontario) drove in two and hit his ninth double of the season.
The Spartans broke the game open with an eight-run fourth inning - on only four hits. EMU's pitching contributed to the big inning with four consecutive walks, and the staff as a whole combined for nine free passes in the game. Burrill slammed his third homer of the season to lead off the inning, while Volas and Koerber each hit run-scoring doubles.
MSU continued the onslaught with four runs on four hits in the sixth. Koerber, Erik Morris (So., Orchard Lake) and James Moreno (Jr., Holt) all had RBI hits in the inning. Moreno drove in his second run of the game with a deep double to center field that plated Koerber in the seventh.
Spartan starter Jon Kowalski (So., Sterling Heights) pitched six solid innings to improve to 2-0 for the season. Kowalski only allowed two earned runs on six hits while striking out two.
Michigan State returns to action with a four-game series at Ohio State this weekend (May 2-4). The first game of the series is scheduled for Friday at 6:35 p.m. EDT.
