EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State baseball head coach Ted Mahan has announced that Jim Keyton has signed a national letter of intent to join the Spartan baseball program in 2003-04.
Keyton, a 6-4 first baseman, starred at Lansing Eastern High School this past spring. He was named first team All-State, All-District and All-Capital Area Conference, and was named last week to the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association and the Detroit Free Press Dream Teams. He hit .489 as a senior, blasting 11 home runs and 12 doubles while driving in 49 runs and slugging 1.011.
"Our entire staff has seen Jim play and we feel that he's going to be an impact player," said Mahan. "He is a power-hitting first baseman and he should definitely contribute to our program right away."
Keyton starred for two seasons at Traverse City West High School, before competing for Lansing Eastern as a junior and senior. Keyton was a team captain for Eastern this spring.
Keyton, a National Merit Scholarship participant who plans to be an engineering major, has strong ties to MSU. His uncle, Kerry Keyton, earned three letters as an offensive tackle on the Spartan football team from 1988-90. His aunts, Tracy (1982) and Lesley (1986-87), were letterwinners on the MSU softball squad.
