East Lansing, Mich. - With a 5-2 win over Central Michigan to their credit and losses to No. 1 Wake Forest and No. 4 Duke, the Michigan State field hockey team drops to 5-3 on the year and eighth in the STX/NFHCA poll for the week of Sept. 22, the NFHCA announced today.
Already this season, half of the Spartans competition has come against ranked opponents. The Spartans won 3-2 over then-No. 15 and current No. 14 Louisville. They have dropped contests to No. 2 North Carolina, No. 1 Wake Forest and No. 4 Duke, accounting for each of the three losses this season.
From here on out the Michigan State schedule will not get any easier as Indiana (19th), Northwestern (20th), Iowa (9th), Michigan (5th), Hofstra (receiving votes), Penn State (6th) and Ohio State (receiving votes) account for seven of the final nine games of the Spartans' regular season.
MSU next travels to Indiana where it will open the Big Ten season on Friday, Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. in Mellencamp Pavilion.
