Women's Tennis Beats Toledo, 6-1

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team won it's second match of the weekend, 6-1, against Toledo Sunday. Yesterday the Spartans beat Bowling Green, 6-1, bringing their season record to 2-2.
In the No.1 singles match, junior Keri Thompson (Long Beach, Calif.) defeated Myria Cueva, 6-4, 7-5. The No. 2 match saw freshman Shelley Brady (Grand Blanc, Mich.) take on Eunice Paravicini, as Paravicini won 6-1, 6-2. At the No.3 position senior Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) won her matches, 6-0, 6-0, against Jen Meister.
Freshman Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) played her first home match as a Spartan at No. 4 as she defeated Daniella Moran, 6-3, 6-2.
"I love the team atmosphere here," said Andrews. "It's been really exciting to be a part of it."
Freshman Pascal Schnitzer (Santiago, Chile) also won at No. 5 singles match as she beat Betsy Hoffman, 6-2, 6-0. The No. 6 match saw Jessica Baron (Miami, Fla.) beat Claire Smalley, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles, Cuevea and Paravicini beat MSU's No.1 team of Lay and Thompson 9-8 (7-2). The No. 2 match saw Brady and Andrews against Moran and Meister as the Spartans won 8-3. No. 3 doubles saw Schnitzer and Baron defeat Hoffman and Smalley, 8-1.
"Our goal was to be 2-2, and we did that," said head coach Tim Bauer. "We have two weeks of practice before our next match, so there are a few things that we're going to sharpen up. It was a good weekend, and it showed us a lot as a team as to where we want to be."
Women's tennis will host Eastern Michigan on Feb. 6, at 6 p.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
