
Women's Soccer Earns 3-2 Win At Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Michigan State women's soccer team snapped its five-game losing streak Sunday, defeating Oakland, 3-2. With the win, MSU improves to 9-7-1 on the season, while Oakland falls to 7-8.
Michigan State opened the scoring in the 10th minute on a shot by forward Maureen Pawlak (Fr./Commerce Township) that beat Golden Grizzlies goalkeeper Jessica Howard for a 1-0 lead. Midfielder Abby Shepherd (Sr./Milford) assisted on the goal.
Forward Emma Harris (Jr./Portage) scored her team-best fifth goal of the season in the 33rd minute from 10 yards out off an assist from Shepherd to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead.
Kristi Swaving put Oakland on the board in the 53rd minute after beating two defenders to score from five yards out to cut MSU's advantage at 2-1.
Spartan forward Jenee Witherspoon (So./Midland) scored from 20 yards out in the 74th minute off an assist from midfielder Ashley Lawson (Burlington, Ontario) for a 3-1 lead.
Swaving scored three minutes later on an assist from Kristi Mitchell for the final margin.
MSU outshot Oakland by a 16-9 margin, but the Golden Grizzlies held a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks. Goalkeeper Erin Carlson (Sr./Portage) finished the game with six saves for the Spartans.
MSU will play its final Big Ten game of the season against No. 13 Michigan on Friday, Oct. 22 at 3 p.m. to open a three-game homestand at Old College Field.
