EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's and women's swimming and diving opens its 2004-05 season against Kentucky on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m. at UK's Lancaster Aquatic Center.
"We are really excited to get our season started and also to go compete somewhere different," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "This program has never had a dual meet with Kentucky, so that is pretty exciting."
Junior Ian Clutten (Capetown, South Africa) is one of 17 returning letterwinners for the MSU men. He placed 22nd in the 50 breaststroke at FINA Short Course World Championships on Oct. 10.
On the women's side, senior Tammy Jones (Conyers, Ga.) and sophomore Eve Brusie (Grand Haven, Mich.) helped MSU win eight events in an exhibition meet against Illinois on Oct. 9. Jones won the 100 butterfly and Brusie captured the 50 freestyle for the Spartans.
"I think it's important for us to get a handle on where we are and get a really good starting point for our season. Kentucky is a quality SEC school and our kids know that this is an opportunity to race a great team right off the bat," said Gianiodis.
The Spartans open their home schedule with Big Ten dual meets next week on Oct. 27 & 30. The Spartan women host Michigan in their Big Ten season opener at the Charles McCaffree Pool, located in the IM West Building, on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. The Spartan men host Iowa on Saturday, Oct. 30 at noon.
