ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team began play at the ITA Midwest Regional Tournament Thursday in Ann Arbor. Two Spartans were in action during the opening day's qualifying singles event.
Freshman Brian Compton (Cincinnati, Ohio) had a tough draw, facing fifth-seeded Andrew Eklov of Illinois in the opening round, but Compton persevered in two tough sets. Both sets went to tiebreakers, but Compton prevailed in each case, winning the first set 7-6(5) and running away with the second tiebreaker to win the set 7-6(2). Compton advances to the second round to meet Butler's Andy Bartish Friday.
Freshman Adam Monich (Ann Arbor, Mich.) had an easier time against Ivan Kovalev of Illinois-Chicago, cruising to a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Monich will meet ninth-seeded Vinny Gossain in Friday's second round.
Action at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships, which continue through Oct. 26, continues tomorrow as three sets of doubles teams will be in action for MSU in addition to continuation of the qualifying singles draw.
