EAST LANSING, Mich. - Just days before heading to the Final Four in Winston-Salem, N.C., Michigan State field hockey celebrates four Spartans named as All-West Region selections.
Seniors Annebet Beerman and Veerle Goudswaard were both named first-team picks, while forward Michelle Huynh-Ba and goalkeeper Christina Kirkaldy, both juniors, were named to the second team.
Goudswaard leads the team in scoring, with a university all-time high for single-season goals, having posted 31. Goudswaard, who has started all 21 contests this season, also smashed the all-time school record for points, with 65 thus far.
Beerman has racked up an impressive 15-7--37 points this season, ranking her second on the team in scoring. This marks the fourth straight year in which Beerman has been named an All-West Region first team selection.
Huynh-Ba has proved to be an indispensable element for the Spartans in her junior campaign, notching one goal and four assists in 2004.
Junior goalkeeper Christina Kirkaldy is a dominant force in the Spartan net. Kirkaldy has made 67 saves and allowed just 23 goals, while opposing goalies have allowed State to net 68 goals thus far.
The 2004 All-West Region selections mirror the 2004 All-Big Ten team picks, released earlier this month, for which the four athletes were honored as well.
MSU is just one of four teams in the nation that remains in contention for the 2004 NCAA Championship title. The Spartans face off against Duke on Friday, Nov. 19, at 4:30 p.m. in Winston-Salem, N.C. The winner of that contest will face the winner of a Wake Forest-Maryland game for the championship final on Nov. 21 at 12:30 p.m.
