Top Varsity Eight Garners Fourth-Place Finish Among 45 Contenders

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State crew sent its top varsity rowers to the Princeton Chase for a Sunday, Nov. 7 regatta in Princeton, N.J., and the Spartans enjoyed huge success in a number of events.
In a doubles race, sophomores Jenna Peters and Paula Thoms won their event, while the top varsity eight posted a fourth-place finish (16:42.72) among 45 competitive boats. Princeton, Yale and Virginia took first through third places, respectively, in the A-Flight varsity eight event. State's B-Flight eight crossed the finish in 17:37.48, good for 20th place.
"The team did well," said MSU head coach Matt Weise. "Both our first and second varsity eights had good execution in their races. We need to make some technical advances, especially in the second eight, in order to make it more competitive come spring. The athletes have been rising to challenges the entire fall and put together a good race in the eights."
State's top four finished 25th in its event, posting an 18:37.90 finish time on the 3-mile course. Princeton, who won the event, finished in 17:09.36.
State's novice rowers traveled to Wyandotte, Mich., for the American Heritage Classic, where the novice eight captured first place in its race.
"They made some nice adjustments from last week's race and are continuing to improve," Weise said.
MSU's third varsity eight also raced at the Classic and finished second behind Eastern Michigan's top boat.
