Spartan Netters Complete Doubleheader Sweep By Defeating Xavier, 6-1

COLUMBUS, Ohio - After posting a 4-3 upset over No. 8 Vanderbilt earlier in the day, the No. 56 Michigan State men's tennis team completed its third doubleheader sweep of the season with a 6-1 victory over Xavier at the Racquet Club of Columbus. MSU moved its record to 8-1 on the season while the Muskateers fell to 0-4.

The Green and White won all three doubles matches for the first point against XU. Senior Chris Mitchell (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and junior Andrew Formanczyk (Rochester Hills, Mich.) dominated at No. 1, defeating Brad Meadors and Justin Yeager, 8-0. The win improved their record to 8-0 in dual-match play. The combination of junior Anthony Stefani (Grosse Pointe Shores, Mich.) and sophomore Mike Brown (Portage, Mich.) also cruised at No. 2 with an 8-4 triumph over JR Randall and Rob Simpson.

Wrapping up doubles action, junior Josh Efros (West Bloomfield, Mich.) competed in his first match of the 2003-04 campaign, teaming up with freshman Joseph McWilliams (Aurora, Ill.) at No. 3. The Spartan tandem went on to post an 8-5 victory over Rustin Reys and Matt Zollman.

Efros then saw action in his first singles match and came away with a 7-6(4), 6-3 win against Kevin Gaughan at No. 6. Senior Eric Simonton (Annandale, N.J.), junior Cameron Marshall (Louisville, Ky.), Stefani and McWilliams aslo picked up singles wins for the Spartans.

Michigan State will return to the courts Feb. 21 when it faces No. 51 Brown at 12 p.m. and Dayton at 5 p.m. Both matches will be played at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
