Spartans Fall to Florida State in Tallahassee

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Michigan State baseball fell to Florida State, 11-1, under the lights in Tallahassee Saturday night. Senior third baseman James Moreno scored the Spartans' only run, a long shot over the right field fence in the third inning. Moreno went 1-for-3 at the plate. Junior Travis Gulick assisted, going 2-for-3 on the night.
With the loss, Michigan State falls to 4-6 while Florida State improves to 15-5 on the year.
The Spartans got out to a slow start while the Seminoles spread 10 runs over the first four innings to MSU's one. Michigan State had just six hits to FSU's 13.
Florida State's Matt Sauls led the Seminoles, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and scoring three runs.
State threw four different pitchers in the loss as Scott Koerber dropped to 0-3 on the season, starting the first 1.2 innings of the game. Adam White and Chris Toepper threw two innings in relief while Jeremy Dow added 2.1 innings of work.
Florida State's Eddie Cannon picked up the win in six innings of work, striking out nine and giving up one run on five hits.
The Spartans struggled from the mound as Dow struck out the first Florida State batter in the top of the sixth inning. The sophomore struck out two batters and gave up one run and four hits. Toepper struck out three, surrendering no runs and just one hit in his two innings of work to close the game.
With a mass substitution in the eighth, MSU had six freshmen on the field, including Clay Kovac's first appearance at first base for the Green and White.
Michigan State wraps up its three-game Florida State series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Dick Howser Stadium.
