SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The No. 47 Michigan State men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 43 Notre Dame Tuesday, March 2 at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. The loss was only MSU's third of the season as it fell to 11-3 overall (0-0 Big Ten) while the Irish improved to 8-5 (1-1 Big East).
The Fighting Irish immediately took charge of the match in doubles play, sweeping all three contests to take a 1-0 lead. The duo of senior Chris Mitchell (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and junior Andrew Formanczyk (Rochester Hills, Mich.) came up just short of a State win as they fell to Luis Haddock and Matthew Scott at No. 2, 9-7.
MSU did not enjoy much success in singles either, as it won only one set in the six matches. Mitchell once again had a win in his sights, this time at No. 3 against Brent D'Amico, by picking up the first set, 6-3. But eventually D'Amico stormed back to take the next two sets for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory. Formanczyk also lost a tough battle at No. 1 as he fell to Haddock, 7-5, 7-5, while senior Eric Simonton (Annandale, N.J.) gave Stephen Bass a scare at No. 4 before slipping, 6-4, 6-4.
The Spartans will continue their three-match stretch away from home when they travel to southern California for their annual spring break trip. MSU will face UC-Irvine March 9 and Pepperdine March 10.
