Markusen Signs Contract With Trenton Titans

TRENTON, N.J. - The Trenton Titans of the ECHL has signed former Michigan State defenseman Joe Markusen (Park River, N.D.). Markusen will wear No. 5 and is expected to make his debut against the Wheeling Nailers tonight (April 2).
Markusen, a 6-0, 193-lb. blueliner, was a four-year letterwinner for the Spartans (2000-04) and compiled three goals and 27 assists for 30 points in 155 career contests. As a senior in 2003-04, Markusen appeared in 36 games, adding nine assists and a +8 rating.
He was selected as MSU's Bill Burgess Outstanding Senior award winner in 2004 and was a two-time MSU Goofus Award Winner (2003 and 2004). In addition, he earned special mention to the CCHA All-Academic team in both 2003 and 2004.
As a freshman in 2001, he led MSU rookies in games played (41) and scoring with 1-4-5 totals. He was named MSU's Outstanding Rookie and earned the team's Most Improved Player Award. He scored his first collegiate tally at Ohio State on Feb. 23, 2001.
He appeared in 39 games as a sophomore, registering five assists. In addition, he was one of six Spartan skaters with a plus/minus rating of +10 or better. During his junior campaign, Markusen tallied a career-high 11 points (two goals, nine assists) in 39 games. His biggest goal of the season was the game winner in a 4-0 shutout of Michigan on Feb. 28, 2003.
Prior to his arrival at MSU, Markusen spent two seasons (1998-2000) with the Lincoln Stars in the United States Hockey League. He totaled 44 points (10 goals, 34 assists) in 96 games during his stint with Lincoln. In addition, Lincoln captured the 2000 USHL regular-season championship.
