Spartan Rowing Finishes Fourth Overall At Big Ten Championship

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Michigan State women's crew finished fourth overall at the Big Ten Championship Regatta, earning 111 points total. The Spartans recorded a team total score just one point behind third-place Ohio State's 112 and just four points behind Wisconsin, who registered 115 team points. Michigan took the conference championship title for the second-consecutive year with 128 points.

"We did everything that we could," said MSU head coach Bebe Bryans. "We just were not fast enough."

The Spartans' highlight of the day was their B-Flight varsity four's victory, which earned them the Big Ten title in that event. State crossed the finish line in 7:42.3 to defeat the Wolverines, who took second. Emily Ferry coxed the Spartans to the win and rowers included Liz Brennan, Julia Burke, Kathy Sorowyk and Renee Bloome.

"They really put together a great performance," said Bryans. "They were able to execute and that made for an exciting race."

Michigan State entered the top-flight varsity eight race, the final event of the day, in first place for overall team standings. MSU had the lead for the majority of what proved to be an extremely close competition, but Michigan managed to pull ahead to take a win by 1.1 seconds.

Michelle Fix coxed the varsity eight, which included rowers Stacey Hicks, Erin Robertson, Roz Bialczak, Christen Brown, Jasmine Pickler, Paula Thoms, Kirsten Rasanen and Katie Isaacs.

"Everyone really worked in the varsity eight final," said Bryans. "We did not go fast enough, but everyone put forth her best effort."
