KNOXVILLE, Tenn.- - Michigan State crew had a strong showing against tough competition in the opening heats and afternoon semi-finals of the Central/South Region Championship, the eighth-annual Lexus Sprints.
MSU entered the contest ranked No. 11 in the nation. No. 3 Michigan, No. 5 Ohio State, No. 10 Wisconsin and No. 14 Notre Dame. No. 7 Virginia and No. 20 Texas represent the other top-ranked competitors, as well as the only teams that were able to defeat the Spartans on Saturday.
The Spartans competed in a series of close races to qualify for advancement for Sunday's final races and the A-Flight varsity eight race provided particularly fierce competition. In its morning heat, State (6:53.1) defeated Iowa (6:55.0), Miami (Fla.) (7:03.7), SMU (7:10.7) and North Carolina (7:12.4) to finish second behind Wisconsin (6:49.7) and qualify for the first afternoon semi-final. In its afternoon follow up performance, MSU finished fourth, recording 6:50.0, just one place shy of the A Final qualification and less than three seconds behind third place finisher Texas (6:47.5).
The Green and White varsity four's second place finish (7:51.3) in its morning heat was good for an A/B semi-final qualification. MSU faced a tough slate of competition in its afternoon semi, including conference opponents Ohio State (7:53.9) and Michigan (7:58.7), who were the top two finishers in the race. Notre Dame crossed the finish line third and posted 8:00.1 and the Spartans followed, recording 8:04.3. The Green and White finish earned them a place in the B Final for Sunday.
State's second varsity eight won its morning heat in 6:49.9, defeating Wisconsin's second-place finish of 6:55.8. The Spartans semi-final showing (7:04.3) was good for third place behind Virginia (6:55.3) and 2004 Big Ten Champion Michigan (6:59.0) and earned MSU a spot in the A Final on Sunday.
