Michigan State Rowing Finishes Fifth At Regional Championship

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Michigan State women's crew finished among the nation's best at the Central/Southern Regional Championship on Sunday. The Spartans earned fifth place overall and claimed fourth place in the Central Region. Tennessee hosted the two-day regatta, which featured 23 teams from both regions and concluded with final races on Sunday after Saturday's qualifying heats and semi-finals.
Virginia took first place overall with a team total of 404 points, followed by Ohio State (391), Wisconsin (363) and Michigan (362). The Green and White secured fifth place with 303 points. Virginia represents the only top-five finisher from the Southern Region. Overall team standings, as well as complete results from Sunday finals, are listed below.
The Green and White advanced three boats to the finals, two of which won their final events. Both the A-Flight varsity eight and the A-Flight varsity four qualified for B-Flight finals. The second varsity eight advanced to the A-Flight final in its event.
The first Spartan varsity eight crossed the finish line in 6:49.9 to claim first place in its final, placing seventh overall. The Green and White defeated Notre Dame (6:51.3), Minnesota (6:54.0), Iowa (6:54.4), Duke (6:56.6) and Kansas (7:05.4). Ohio State won the A-Flight final at 6:34.8.
The Green and White varsity four also won its final, placing seventh overall, with a winning time of 7:47.3. Minnesota (7:48.6) came in second, followed by Central Florida (7:59.8) and Tennessee (8:02.5). Texas (8:16.1) closed out the race nearly 30 seconds after the Spartan victory. The Spartan finish was just two seconds behind Michigan's 7:45.3 finish. The Wolverines rounded out the A-Flight final in sixth place, while Virginia posted 7:33.1 to win the event.
State's second varsity eight took third place in a close final race that was stacked with talented boats. MSU recorded 6:50.6, one second after Michigan's 6:49.5 finish. Virginia won the event in 6:44.5.
Next, Michigan State looks to receive its seventh consecutive bid to the NCAA National Championship Regatta, which is scheduled for the weekend of Friday, May 28. The NCAA will announce its selections on Tuesday, May 18.
