EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State head swimming coach Matt Gianiodis has announced the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for the 2004-05 school year. Joining the Spartan program are: Adam Schmitt (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven); Matt Torres (Niles, Ill./Niles West) and Amanda Wyman (Essexville, Mich./Essexville).
"We feel pretty well about our class of 2008," commented Gianiodis. "On the men's side, we have added some really good athletes and really good people to the group we put together in November. On the women's side, we were more selective. However, we feel pretty comfortable about both teams heading into next year."
Schmitt received the Michigan High School Athletics Association Swimmer of the Year accolades in 2003-04 after winning the state championship in both the 50 and 100 freestyle.
"Adam is a real plus for us," commented Gianiodis. "He has so much versatility; he could have won four different events at the state meet this year. He is also a great relay swimmer and we expect him to contribute right away. It is particularly exciting for us to get a high profile Michigan athlete and we hope that trend continues."
Torres was an Illinois state finalist in both the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle.
"Matt is a tough hard worker, and he is really a bright kid," Gianiodis said. "We look forward to him adding something special to our distance group."
Wyman, who swam at Essexville High School, was the state runner-up in the 200 freestyle and was a finalist in the 100 free.
"Amanda is a good swimmer with a lot of ability," remarked Gianiodis. "She is a very good athlete and played multiple sports in high school. She will add depth to our freestyle group and should do very well here at MSU."
The Spartans inked three student-athletes in sprinters Matt McNichols (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) and Andrew Sunde (Fenton, Mich./Flint Powers) and diver Tylor Fick (Midland, Mich./Bay City Western) during the early signing period in November.
