EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State senior Scott Koerber (Harper Woods, Mich.) has signed a free agent contract to play professional baseball in the Chicago Cubs organization. The left-handed pitcher will report next week to Mesa, Ariz. - the Cubs' spring training home - where the Cubs will then determine where he will be sent to begin his professional career.
Koerber was a valuable commodity for Michigan State, starring as both a pitcher and first baseman, but was signed as a pitcher by the Cubs. He was 2-3 in eight games including seven starts on the mound for MSU in 2004. He also hit a team-best .352, pounding 11 doubles and seven home runs, driving in 30 runs and scoring 27 despite missing 19 games due to injury.
Two other Spartans were drafted by major league baseball teams earlier this week. Junior Travis Gulick (East Lansing, Mich.) went in the 23rd round to Arizona, and junior Erik Morris (Orchard Lake, Mich.) was selected by Philadelphia in the 44th round.
