FT. WAYNE, Ind. - The Michigan State men's soccer team opened the 2004 exhibition season with a 2-0 victory over Kentucky on Friday night at the IPFW Soccer Showcase in Ft. Wayne, Ind. After a scoreless first half, the Spartans found the back of the net twice in the second half. Spartan senior forward John Minagawa-Webster (Monroe) opened the scoring with a goal in the 57th minute off an assist from junior midfielder John Kaczmarek (Plymouth). MSU added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute when senior forward Jordan Gruber (Beverly Hills) scored unassisted. Michigan State split time between two goalkeepers as head coach Joe Baum enters the season looking to find someone to replace 2003 All-Big Ten goalie Mike Robinson. Freshman Jason Tillman (Brighton) started the contest. In the first half, he was required to make just one stop. Sophomore Chris Austin (Livonia) was in goal for the second half, stopping four Wildcat shots. The Spartans return to action on Sunday at 12 noon with a game against IUPUI in the IPFW Soccer Showcase.
