MSU Men's Cross Country Fares Well At Spartan Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's cross country team opened the 2004 season Friday with success at the 2004 Nike/Playmakers Spartan Invitational at Forest Akers East Golf Course. There was no team scores taken at the meet, but the Spartans performed well in the men's 8K race.
Freshman Stephan Shay was the top runner for MSU as he finished in seventh place with a time of 25:03. Sophomore Matt Bartlebaugh placed 12th with a time of 25.18.
Other Spartans who competed in the meet were: senior Steve Sherer (16th, 25:25), freshman Dustin Voss (17th, 25:25), junior Nathan Egger (19th, 25:29), freshman Adam Sprangler (22nd, 25:38), sophomore Nick Oertel (29th, 25:49), sophomore Justin Zanotti (38th, 26:11), sophomore Jim Pancoast (45th, 26:31), and sophomore Mitch Graham (48th, 26:39) .
"I thought that we made some progess from a couple of weeks ago," said Michigan State head coach Walt Drenth. "They really gave themselves a chance at the halfway point to move up and be reasonably competitive to the finish line."

The Spartans will be idle next week before competing in the Notre Dame Invitational held in South Bend, Ind. on Friday, Oct. 1 at 11 a.m.
